I run a small lawncare and Treecare company in NE Ohio and last year the price of fertilizer went sky high in price.
I first would like to explain the main cause of higher prices in the services that I provide. The
biggest cost is fertilizer. It is used with just about every treatment. Whoever had the idea to use a food source as a fuel source that was not efficient was short sited. I am talking about ethanol. It can be made from many sources. A major one is corn. Corn needs more fertilizer, especially Nitrogen, which is what our lawns and trees need most. Right now 30% of our corn is grown for ethanol. That is a lot of corn that does not go towards food. The demand for nitrogen has increased in the past few years because of this and the ability to produce more has not been kept up. We get most of our nitrogen from China and they tax it at a rate sometimes near 100% of the cost as it leaves their country.
